Notes

D.A. Pennebaker told AV Club in 1998:

"We were a little uncertain about the whole project, because they really wanted a big film. So I went to one of their concerts in Oregon, and I was really knocked out by their audience. It came over me that their audience only went to Depeche Mode concerts. They didn't go to any other concerts, so it wasn't like a shared audience or anything. So I was kind of intrigued that they had this strange audience that was kind of like a Druid ceremony, you know, all making mystic signs and whatnot. So we got kind of intrigued by [Depeche Mode] and the possibility of making a film with them, and by the end we had gotten to like them a lot."

Hegedus and Pennebaker said the same in 2019 to Classic Pop Magazine:

Chris Hegedus: "Bruce Kirkland [who represented DM in the USA] called us up and asked us if we were interested in making the film. I think all of us said "Depeche who?" I just had a baby, but DA flew without me to Portland, Oregon to see them in concert ans we decided to do it... while we were still trying to decide on a concept for the film!"

DA Pennebaker: "I thought they were an interesting band. When I went to the concert, most of the crowd didn't look like they went to other shows. It was like they had their own special audience."

Dave Gahan told Street Magazine in 1989:

"[The first time] we invited [D.A. Pennebaker] down to hear us was in San Francisco [sic]. He couldn't believe the power that was going on between the audience and the band - the energy that was there."

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark was the support act.
