DEVOTIONAL Tour Diary Part 4: November 27th, LAS VEGAS: Kessler phoned and told me the Vegas show is cancelled. Dave's voice is shot to bits, and he's got flu to boot, Bummer. I've never been there, and I was supposed to do my gig with THE THE. Life seems like one disappointment after another at the moment. Fletch just rang. He says the plane is still going to Vegas and do I want to jump in with him and Grainne. Oh superb! A night off in Vegas with a pocketful of greenbacks!

Instead on this day, the band shot the video for 'In Your Room' somewhere in Los Angeles. Martin Gore had a seizure afterwards from drinking too much. Here are some quotes from Martin:

In BONG magazine in 1998:

"The worst memory about 'In Your Room' is the making of the video. We spent a whole day in the studio filming and I probably had lunch at some point, but it was just something really small, like half a sandwich. We finished filming at about 8 o’clock, and went back to the hotel and I forgot to eat. We went to the bar and I didn’t eat... We went out to a club and I didn't eat... We came back and had a party in my room that went on till really late. The next day I had to get up and go to a band meeting. So I got up feeling absolutely terrible and sort of staggered to the meeting, I couldn't even stand up. I had to lie down during the meeting and that was when I went into a seizure. So whenever I see this video, I just think, 'Oh, God'... It brings back terrible memories."

In Uncut magazine in 2001:

"I didn't eat anything that day. We were shooting a video a couple of days before that happened and I went straight from the video shoot into [the Sunset Marquis hotel] bar, and started drinking. Then I went on to a club, met some guy who gave me some stuff, so I was up all night until probably 9 or 10 in the morning. We had a band meeting at 12 o'clock and I managed to sleep for about an hour. The I got up and I've never felt so dreadful in my life. I managed to literally crawl to this meeting, I had to lay on the floor just saying 'Yes' or 'No', that was all I could muster. At some point, I tried to get up and went into convulsions caused by alcohol and drug withdrawal. That wasn't the first time. It happened two weeks previously, but I didn't know because I was on my own. I suddenly woke up and couldn't remember where I was... it was a real warning to me."

By Gahan's account, "suddenly Mart's just keeled over and he's banging his head on the floor, making these weird noises." "It was a seizure," says Gore. "A big stressful meeting after two hours' sleep: your brain overloads." When he came round, the doctors advised he should never drink again. He recalibrated that into 10 pints rather than 12. Gahan was so upset by Gore's illness that he went to his room and shot up.
