In 2016, Depeche Mode were found to have the most sophisticated lyrics out of any of the UK’s best selling bands in a data study by The Mirror. The determination was made by analysing the lyrics of over 6,000 UK musical groups using the Coleman Liau Index and the SMOG Index, which are algorithms used to determine the difficulty of school text books. An average was taken of each song’s score in both of these tests, with the artist's final score determined by the average score of each song in their discography. Depeche Mode's catalogue was found to be the most lyrically-sophisticated, requiring 10.3 years of education to understand. Of their works, Macro's lyrics was found to be the most academically-challenging.[1]
