1994-06-14 Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia, MD, USA
Stabbing Westward and Primal Scream were the support acts.
As reported in the September 1994 issue of British 'Select' magazine:
Just three songs into [Primal Scream's] support slot with Depeche Mode at the Merriwether Post Pavillion, in Columbia, Maryland, everything had fallen apart. Four bars of the intro to 'Movin' On Up' vanished into the band's programming equipment and Bobbie was singing the first verse when the chorus backing tracks chimed in. Furious, he'd rammed his mikestand into the nearest monitor, slung the mike into the wreckage and stormed off, leaving Denise Johnson to hold the fort. When he slouched back on, the Mode crowd - notoriously blasé US alternative types - had heckled him half-heartedly. Citizen Caned's reply? "Shut your fuckin' mouths!" And they were locked out of their dressing room when the lights went down and the roar went up for the Mode.
Here is Daryl Bamonte's entry for the famous Devotional Tour Diary, published in Bong magazine in 1994:
The Primals’ camp is a bit tense tonight. I think the tour manager’s upset Throb, and he’s refusing to go on. I reasoned with him that if they went on late, then we would go on late and we would run over time and the union would pull the plug on us. Lo and behold, he got up and went on stage. It shows what a bit of gentle coaxing can do (and a case of red wine…)

- Source 1 is a decent audience recording; it's a little muffled, and there's a ringing noise throughout.
